How Does the Environment Benefit?
By combining koala-captivity management practices with koala conservation practices, we are ensuring that both sectors support each other to achieve positive outcomes for koalas in both captive and wild spaces. For examples, the trees planted for koalas in captivity could be used to support wild koalas, and vice-versa.
With proper planning and consultation with local, state and federal government, formal structures and designs could be implemented that would help support captive and wild koala populations. This could:
- Reduce road kill of our native animals;
- Protect trees;
- Educate the community on the importance of wildlife corridors.
Our ongoing work at the Western Sydney International Dragway at Eastern Creek illustrates the benefits of cross-sector collaboration between captive koala management and wild koala conservation management. This program used trees planted and grown for koala’s in captivity which also supports wild koala conservation. The Western Sydney International Dragway is our pilot program and a blueprint for future projects that shows how trees can support other native wildlife and other sectors.
